THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD: A MODEL LEADER

“Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW-peace be upon him) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.” (Qur’an 33 : 21)

The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad SAW

(peace be upon him) has been a perfect model figure. His humanism side made us able to follow the example of whatever achievement he has done. From every aspects of his life and every role he played, we can find the best comprehensive model on himself. How we should play the role as children, as a family leader, as a neighbour, close friend, commander, and also as a state leader.

Muhammad’s leadership is recognized internationally as a phenomenal leader. Only in 23 years, he succeeded to change the face of region under his leadership as the center of excellence with high civilized society and best generation all along the history.

Said Hawa, the writer of Ar Rasul Book explained the excellence of Muhammad SAW (peace be upon him) as a politician and state leader:

1. Understanding every pivotal strength of struggle movement under his leadership, believing in truth and convincing the victory

Comprehensive understanding about all pivotal strengths of the struggle made him able to implement the proper strategy for every phase of his struggle. For example: in the earliest phase of his endeavour mission, he applied sirriyatud dakwah ( secret endeavour mission) by inviting certain people who will receive and follow his proclamation.

Belief in truth and victory of his struggle, made him brave to face all the troubles he went to. Let’s see how was his attitude when his uncle informed him the treats of Quraisy Leaders to stop his struggle. He said: “I swear by God, I won’t leave this principle instructed by Allah the Almighty. That is heavier for me than flaring up the fire by the light of the sun,” HR.Thabrany.

2. Competence to inform and convince all his teaching to all his followers continuously.

The spirit owned by the leader should be shared to the followers so they will have endurance in facing every temptation. It can be seen from his companion’s integrity when they had to face temptation of torturing by torturing in Mecca and temptation of wealth from the result of enemy’s subjection.

3. Ability to create feeling to trust each other between the leader and member

The trust of The Prophet Muhammad to his followers was given by always inviting them in a meeting to discuss and determine the strategy of struggle and also to solve the Islamic society’s problems. For example, in the war of Ahzab, he followed his companion’s suggestion, Salman Al Farisi to make groove around Medina, he also performed meeting and choose the decision recommended by majority of his companions.

The trust owned by his companions can be seen from Sa’ad bin Muadz’s statement when they were preparing the war of Badr, “We believed in and justified you. We also witnessed that what you bring is truth. We swear to obey you. So, go ahead O the Messenger of Allah, we always be together with you. We swear by God who delegated you with truth, if there is an ocean in front of us and you sailed through it, we would join to sail with you, no one among us would refuse. We won’t be reluctant to face the enemy tomorrow. We are patient enough in wars and brave in facing enemies”.

4. Cultivating, managing, paying attention to and directing all his followers without exception

He could think amazingly and pay attention to his followers’ need. Starting from security, hunger which they suffered, house need, and other small problems.

5. Competence to optimize and place every potency of his followers on the right and proper position

Every position must be handled by the right man in the right place, and the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad SAW (peace be upon him) was a person whose a strong foreboding to choose that person. We can see from Amru bin Ash’s statement, “I swear by God, after we believed in Islam, the messenger of Allah Muhammad SAW (peace be upon him) has never changed Khalid bin Walid and me with other companions of him in wars”. Both of them were proved as commander which succeeded to conquer large areas with their troops.

In the war of Ahzab (alliance), when Islamic troops were surrounded by polytheist troops in front of them and Quraidzah of Jews troops behind them, the Messenger of Allah delegate Nu’aim bin Mas’ud who recently became a Moslem and had a good relationship with all belligerents in the war of Ahzab to perform dissension tactics among the allied enemies. The big amount of allied troops finally could be weak, there was no trust to each other and then they retreat their troops from the war.

6. Competence to solve the emergency problems and sudden troubles

Along the history of world leadership, the prophet Muhammad is recorded well as a good leader. He can solve the emergency problems easily in simple way. For example, in the moment of laying hajar aswad cornerstone by asking all the leaders of Quraisy tribes to hold the cloth where hajar aswad put on then leave the cloth with hajar aswad altogether to the corner of Ka’bah (the Great Mosque of Mecca). Other examples are problem solving after hijrah (flight of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina) by make brothers of Muhajirin and Anshor, and proclaimed the Medina Charter as a regulation which tie together all the groups in Medina.

Bernardsho, a man of letters from England stated, “However this world required a figure such as Muhammad who able to solve various kinds of big problems while drinking coffee”.

7. Having a future vision

Having a future vision can be seen from his decision in approving Hudaibiyah Treaty which seems damaging Islamic society, nevertheless it later proves that with Hudaibiyah Treaty, Islamic society then obtained a big victory by Mecca subjection.

8. Ability to bring his followers toward victory and make use of that victory well

Victory by victory could be achieved by Islamic society under the Prophet Muhammad’s leadership, nevertheless he taught his followers to not intoxicate with that victory. He taught that their struggle was not merely to reach the victory, but for more honorable purpose namely to liberate human being from digression and tyranny.

Those are the characteristics of Muhammad’s leadership as a true statesman which was written by the gold ink of the history, as an eternal model for people who expecting God’s bless and remembering their responsible in hereafter.
